WORCESTER, Mass. ­– With the game tied at 1-1, sophomore Shayne Stockton (Rochester, N.Y.) scored the game-winner at 9:01 of the third period as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated American International, 2-1, in the Crusaders' home opener at the Hart Center in Atlantic Hockey action. Sophomore Adam Schmidt (Warrington, Pa.) contributed on both Crusader goals with a goal and an assist. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 1-1-0 overall (1-0-0 Atlantic Hockey), while the Yellow Jackets fall to 0-3-0 overall (0-1-0 Atlantic Hockey). The Crusaders remain undefeated in Atlantic Hockey season openers as they are 8-0-1 all-time.

The Yellow Jackets took a 1-0 lead at 8:23 of the first period when Michael Penny knocked in a rebound off a shot by Steve Mele. With just six seconds remaining in the second period, Schmidt tipped in a slap shot by junior Brendan Baker (Edina, Minn.) for the power play goal. The goal was the first of the season for Schmidt. Sophomore Jeffrey Reppucci (Newburyport, Mass.) was also credited with an assist. The game remained tied until Stockton fired in a rebound off a shot by Schmidt at 9:01 of the third period. The goal was Stockton's second of the season and his third career game winner.

Freshman goalie Matt Ginn (Lindsay, Ontario) earned his first collegiate win with 14 saves and is now 1-1-0 on the year. Ben Meisner made 36 saves in the loss for AIC. The Crusaders went 1-6 on the power play and AIC went 0-2. The Crusaders outshot the Yellow Jackets, 35-18.

The Crusaders return to action when they meet No. 8 Boston University at Agganis Arena at 7:00 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 22.
