WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross senior men's hockey player Mike Daly (South Burlington, Vt.) has been named one of 20 candidates for the 2012 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award as college hockey's outstanding NCAA Division I senior student-athlete for the men's hockey division. Go here to view the official website of the men's hockey award.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition. The 20 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, Division I men's coaches and fans who will select one finalist who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
Daly, who is the captain of this season's team, has played in all but four games during his career with 109 games played on defense with eight goals and 30 assists for 38 points. He was named to the Ledyard National Bank Classic all-tournament team and earned AT&T Crusader of the Week accolades in the 2009-2010 season, as he scored his first collegiate game-winning goal and had one assist for two points against Dartmouth as the team won 4-2. He received the Michael P. Quinn Award given to the best defenseman on the team over the course of the season also in 2009-2010.
Daly has a 3.84 grade-point average and earned first team 2010-2011 Capital One Academic All-District I at-large honors. He has made the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic team in every season. Daly won the 2011 Joe Tomasello Unsung Hero Award given by the New England Hockey Writers. He earned the team's Glenn "Spike" Crane Memorial Award for the second straight season which is given to the player who excels most in the little things and leads his teammates by example. Daly has volunteered in the community including for Catholic Charities at a Worcester food pantry.
The Crusaders play an exhibition contest against New Brunswick on Friday, Oct. 7 at home at 7:00 p.m. The Crusaders start the regular season at ECAC opponent Quinnipiac on Oct. 12 and meet AIC at home on Oct. 15.
