WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Jordan Cyr (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and freshman Rob Linsmayer (Winnetka, Ill.) each recorded one goal and one assist as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated American International, 4-2, in the first round of the Atlantic Hockey Tournament at the Hart Center on Friday evening. With the win, the seventh-seeded Crusaders improve to 12-17-6 overall and advance to a best-two-out-of-three quarterfinal series versus second seed Sacred Heart at the Milford Ice Pavilion in Milford, Conn., on March 12-14, while the 10th-seeded Yellow Jackets end the season 5-24-4. Sacred Heart won the season series over Holy Cross, 3-1-0, with the Crusaders going 1-1-0 at the Milford Ice Pavilion. This was the second straight season that Holy Cross defeated AIC in the first round at the Hart Center as the Crusaders defeated the Yellow Jackets by a 1-0 score in overtime last year. Holy Cross is 6-0 all-time in Atlantic Hockey Tournament games played at the Hart Center and are now 4-0 all-time versus AIC in the tournament.

The first period went scoreless as Holy Cross outshot AIC, 10-5, while the Crusaders went 0-2 on the power play and the Yellow Jackets went 0-1.

There were five goals scored in the second half starting with a goal by Chris Markiewicz at 6:48 to give AIC a 1-0 lead. Holy Cross tied the game at 9:29 when Cyr netted his team-leading 13th goal of the season. Junior Mark Znutas (Emerson, N.J.) took a shot that deflected off Linsmayer, and then Cyr scored on the rebound. The Crusaders took a 2-1 lead at 11:53 with a goal by junior J.P. Martignetti (Winchester, Mass.). The goal was his third of the season. Freshman Erik Vos (Carlisle, Ontario) and sophomore Kyle Atkins (Brockville, Ontario) each posted assists. Holy Cross scored its third straight goal at 12:31 when Linsmayer found the back of the net for the eventual game-winner and his third goal of the season. The goal was his first collegiate game-winner. Cyr and senior Rob Forshner (Sundre, Alberta) each had assists. The Yellow Jackets cut the Holy Cross lead to 3-2 with a goal by Mike Little. For the period, the Crusaders outshot AIC by a 15-5 margin, while Holy Cross went 0-1 on the man-advantage. The Crusaders increased their lead to 4-2 at 13:11 of the third period when junior Matt Celin (Gibsonia, Pa.) scored his second goal of the season. Freshman Brendan Baker (Edina, Minn.) and senior Ryan Driscoll (Dorchester, Mass.) and had assists. AIC went with an empty net with 1:18 left in the period but was unable to find the back of the net for the 4-2 final score.

Holy Cross freshman goalie Thomas Tysowsky (Amherst, N.Y.) stopped 15 shots and improves to 11-15-6. Ben Meisner made 19 saves and allowed the first three Holy Cross goals, while Dan Ramirez stopped eight shots and allowed one goal. Tysowsky's 783 saves are the second most in a single-season on the Holy Cross all-time Division I list  behind Tony Quesada's 840 set in the 2005-2006 season. The Crusaders went 0-3 on the power play and AIC went 0-1, while Holy Cross outshot the Yellow Jackets, 31-17.
