Men's Hockey Falls To Sacred Heart, 3-1
MILFORD, Conn. - Eric Delong scored the game-winner for the Pioneers in the third period to break a 1-1 tie as the Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to Sacred Heart, 3-1, in Atlantic Hockey action at the Milford Ice Pavilion on Friday evening. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 10-16-5 overall (9-12-4 Atlantic Hockey), while the Pioneers improve to 17-10-4 (15-7-3 Atlantic Hockey) with four straight wins and are now 14-1-2 in their last 17 games. These two teams will conclude their four-game regular season series on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at the Hart Center as Sacred Heart leads the series 2-1.
The first period went scoreless as the Pioneers outshot the Crusaders, 12-9, while each team went 0-2 on the power play.
At 10:12 of the second period, the Crusaders took a 1-0 lead when senior Ryan Driscoll (Dorchester, Mass.) scored his second goal of the season. After receiving the puck from junior Matt Celin (Gibsonia, Pa.), sophomore Andrew Cox (Lombardy, Ontario) sent a crossing pass from the left side to Driscoll who then fired the puck in the upper right corner of the net. For the period, Holy Cross outshot Sacred Heart by a 13-10 margin, while the Pioneers went 0-1 on the man-advantage.
The Pioneers tied the game at 1-1 at 8:57 of the third period when Patrick Knowlton skated the length of the ice with the puck and scored on a backhander that trickled over the goal line. At 12:10, Sacred Heart took a 2-1 lead when Delong tipped in a shot by Alex Stuart. With 1:55 left to go Delong scored his second straight goal for the 3-1 final score.
Holy Cross freshman goalie Thomas Tysowsky (Amherst, N.Y.) made 35 saves and is 10-14-5, while Steven Legatto stopped 29 shots and improves to 15-7-3. The Crusaders went 0-4 on the power play and the Pioneers went 0-5, while Sacred Heart outshot Holy Cross, 38-30.
