Men's Hockey Drops 1-0 Contest To AIC
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Yellow Jackets' Tom Mele scored the only goal of the game as the Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to American International, 1-0, in Atlantic Hockey action at the Olympia Ice Center on Saturday evening. With the loss, the Crusaders fall 5-13-5 overall (4-9-4 Atlantic Hockey), while the Yellow Jackets improve to 3-16-2 (3-12-2 Atlantic Hockey). AIC wins the four-game regular season series, 2-0-2.
At just 2:17 of the first period, AIC jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Mele fired a slap shot from between the two face-off circles that went past Holy Cross freshman goalie Thomas Tysowsky (Amherst, N.Y.). For the period, the Yellow Jackets outshot the Crusaders, 7-5, while AIC went 0-1 on the only power play.
The second period went scoreless as Holy Cross outshot AIC by a 15-8 margin, while the Crusaders went 0-1 on the man-advantage and the Yellow Jackets went 0-2.
Holy Cross went with an empty net with 1:01 left in the third period but was unable to score for the 1-0 final. For the period the Crusaders outshot the Yellow Jackets, 19-7.
Tysowsky stopped 21 shots and is now 5-11-5, while Ben Meisner made 39 saves and is 3-6-0. Holy Cross went 0-3 on the power play and AIC went 0-4, while the Crusaders outshot the Yellow Jackets, 39-22.
The Crusaders return to action on Jan. 22-23, when they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., to play Atlantic Hockey opponent Air Force. The Falcons lead the season series, 1-0-1. Earlier this season in Worcester on Nov. 13, Air Force won, 1-0, while on Nov. 14 the two teams tied, 2-2.
