ERIE, Pa. - The Lakers scored the first four goals of the game as the Holy Cross men's hockey team fell to Mercyhurst, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 3-7-2 (3-5-2 Atlantic Hockey), while the Lakers improve to 4-9-1 (4-5-1 Atlantic Hockey). The Lakers win the season series 2-0-0 as they won yesterday by a score of 5-1.
The Lakers jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 1:13 of the first period with a goal by Scott Pitt. Then at 17:35, Jeff Terminesi made it a 2-0 score. For the period, the Lakers outshot Holy Cross, 10-6, while each team went 0-1 on the power play.
At 7:32 of the second period, the Lakers increased their lead to 3-0 when Brandon Coccimiglio found the back of the net. The Crusaders outshot the Lakers by a 15-11 margin, while Holy Cross went 0-3 on the man-advantage and the Lakers went 0-1.
At 12:37 of the third period, the Lakers scored a power play goal as Coccimiglio netted his second goal of the contest to make it a 4-0 game. Freshman Erik Vos (Carlisle, Ontario) scored Holy Cross' lone goal with just 35 seconds left as freshman Evan Zych (Kilbride, Ontario) recorded his first collegiate point with an assist. The goal was Vos' third of the season.
Holy Cross freshman goalie Thomas Tysowsky (Amherst, N.Y.) made 22 saves and falls to 3-6-2, while Ryan Zapolski stopped 32 shots and improves to 4-8-1. Holy Cross outshot the Lakers, 33-26, while the Crusaders went 0-5 on the power play and the Lakers went 1-4.
The Crusaders will play their next five games at home starting when they play at the Hart Center against Connecticut on Tuesday, Nov. 24. The game is at 7:00 p.m.
