ERIE, Pa. - Three shorthanded goals by Mike Gurtler led the Mercyhurst men's hockey team to a 5-1 victory over Holy Cross on Friday evening at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. With the loss, the Crusaders fall to 3-6-2 (3-4-2 Atlantic Hockey), while the Lakers improve to 3-9-1 (3-5-1 Atlantic Hockey). These two teams will conclude their season series on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 4:00 p.m.
The Lakers got the scoring started at the 10:30 mark in the first period when Gurtler scored his first shorthanded goal of the night. Jeff Terminesi put Mercyhurst up 2-0 at the 17:22 mark when he scored the eventual game-winning goal.
Mercyhurt took a three goal lead with 12:39 on the scoreboard when Gurtler scored his second shorthanded goal. Holy Cross was finally able to get past Mercyhurst goalie Ryan Zapolski when senior Rob Forshner (Sundre, Alberta) scored his first goal of the season on an assist from sophomore Kyle Atkins (Brockville, Ontario) and sophomore Matthew Davis (Lancaster, N.Y.). Despite outshooting Mercyhurst 14-6 in the second period, Holy Cross was unable to find the back of the net again, ending the period down 3-1.
Matt Fennell capitalized on the man advantage, scoring a power play goal less than three minutes into the third period to give Mercyhurst a three goal lead. Gurtler scored his third shorthanded goal of the night at the 6:19 mark to end the game in favor of the Lakers, 5-1.
Holy Cross freshman goalie Thomas Tysowsky (Amherst, N.Y.) made the start in net, allowing three goals and recording 10 saves. Senior Ian Dams (Manotick, Ontario) entered the game in the third period, allowing two goals and recording five saves. Tysowsky suffered the loss, falling to 3-5-2. Zapolski allowed just one goal, making 24 saves and improves to 3-8-1. Holy Cross outshot Mercyhurst 25-20 and went 0-9 on the power play opportunity, while Mercyhurst went 1-8.
