Holy Cross Defeats Sacred Heart, 4-2

MILFORD, Conn. - Sophomore Jay Silvia (Burlington, Mass.) scored two goals including his third game-winner of the season as the Holy Cross men's hockey team defeated Sacred Heart, 4-2, at the Milford Ice Pavilion on Friday night. With the win, the Crusaders improve to 3-3-1 overall (3-1-1 Atlantic Hockey), while the Pioneers fall to 2-3-1 (1-1-0 Atlantic Hockey). Silvia has scored all three of Holy Cross' game-winners so far this season. The home-and-home series between these two teams will conclude on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Hart Center at 7:00 p.m.

The Crusaders jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 3:37 of the first period when Silvia scored his third goal of the season when he fired a shot to the upper left corner of the net from the left faceoff circle. Junior Jordan Cyr (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and freshman Rob Linsmayer (Winnetka, Ill.) were credited with assists. At 7:46, the Pioneers tied the contest at 1-1 with a power play goal by David Berube. For the period, Holy Cross outshot the Pioneers, 8-7, while the Pioneers went 1-2 on the power play.

Holy Cross took a 2-1 lead at 4:10 of the second period when junior Jamie Jelinek (Great Falls, Va.) netted his first goal of the season when he knocked a rebound past Pioneer goalie Steven Legatto. Freshman Kyle Fletcher (Kanata, Ontario) and junior Matt Celin (Gibsonia, Pa.) earned assists. The Crusaders then went down two men for 43 seconds and were able to kill off the penalty and then went onto to kill the rest of the 1:17 down one man to keep the score at 2-1. Holy Cross increased its advantage to 3-1 at 18:44 when Silvia received a crossing pass from Linsmayer and buried the puck for his second goal of the game and fourth of the season. Fletcher also assisted on the goal. The Crusaders outshot the Pioneers by a 17-7 margin, while Holy Cross went 0-2 on the man-advantage and the Pioneers went 0-1.

The Pioneers made it a 3-2 contest with a goal by Patrick Knowlton at 13:47 of the third period. The Crusaders responded with a power play tally by Cyr at 16:44 to increase their lead to 4-2. Sophomore Mike Daly (South Burlington, Vt.) and junior Mark Znutas (Emerson, N.J.) had assists. Holy Cross was able to keep the Pioneers off the scoreboard the rest of the way for the 4-2 final score.

Freshman goalie Thomas Tysowsky (Amherst, N.Y.) made 23 saves to improve to 3-2-1 on the season, while Legatto stopped 30 shots and is now 1-1-1. The Crusaders outshot the Pioneers, 34-25, while each team went 1-4 on the power play.
