Holy Cross Opens Spring Season

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. - The Holy Cross men's golf team opened the 2005 spring season with a fifth place finish at the Fort Lauderdale Spring Classic, March 10-11 at the Grande Oaks Golf Club.

Leading the Crusaders was senior captain Emmit Ferriter (W. Simsbury, Conn.), who placed 17th with a two-round score of 155. Ferriter hit six-above par-77 in the first-round and followed with a score of 78 in the second.

Sophomore Chris Gorczyca (Mashapee, Mass.) and freshman Matt Czarnecki (Greenwich, Conn.) tied for 25th with a final score of 161.

Tying for 27th place was freshman Joe Hajjar (Mahwah, N.J.) and Mike Povemba (White Plains, N.Y.) with two-round tallies of 162.

Holy Cross was 46 strokes behind tournament winner Gonzaga, who finished with a final score of 5896. Loyola's Chris Derby placed first individually with a two-above par 144.

The Crusaders return to action on Wednesday, April 6, when they compete in the Massachusetts State Intercollegiate in Stow, Mass.
