MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Sophomore Roberto Machado (Miami, Fla.) shot a two-round score of 152, including a career-low round of 72 as the Holy Cross men's golf team placed ninth overall at the 2011 New England Division I Championship, held at the Newport National Country Club. As a team, the Crusaders finished with 628 total strokes.
Machado led the team after the first day, scoring a low-round of 78 before shooting his career-low round of 74 to tie for 16th individually. Sophomore Michael McCarthy (Tolland, Conn.) finished next, scoring a 155 to tie for 26th. Sophomore Steve Zychowski (Mendham, N.J.) followed behind McCarthy, tying for 39th with a 159. Rounding out the scoring was freshman Tim DiStefano (Albany, N.Y.) with a 162 and senior Colin Andrade (Assonet, Mass.) with a 169.
Central Connecticut State won the team title with 590 strokes. Sacred Heart's David Renski took home the individual title with two rounds of 71, leading his team to a second place finish.
The Crusaders will go head-to-head with Boston College on April 15 before participating in the 2011 Patriot League Tournament. The match time is to be determined and will be held in Concord, Mass.
