Men's Golf Begins Spring Slate This Weekend

  • The Holy Cross men’s golf team begins its spring slate this upcoming weekend at the George Washington Invitational. The invitational will be held at the Bear Trap Dunes in Bethany Beach, Del., on Friday and Saturday, March 19-20. Tee time is set for 8:30 a.m. both days.
  • The team competed in the George Washington Invite as their first meet of the spring season last year as well. Out of 22 total teams, Holy Cross finished 19th with a team total of 649 strokes. Junior James Widman (Middlebury, Conn.) and former Crusader Joe DePanfilis led the team with a two-round score of 162, tying for 63rd place individually.
  • The Crusaders were selected to finish seventh in the 2010 Patriot League preseason poll with 17 total points. Defending Patriot League champion Bucknell was picked first, earning 69 points and nine first-place votes. Navy followed the Bison, as they were selected to finish second with 62 points and five first-place votes. Rounding out the voting was Army (52 points), Lehigh (34), Colgate (32), Lafayette (28) and Holy Cross (17). Holy Cross has multiple players back that competed in last year's Patriot League Championship, including Widman and junior Colin Andrade (Assonet, Mass.).
  • Freshman Mike McCarthy (Tolland, Conn.) looks to continue his impressive showings for the team as he currently leads the squad in average strokes (75.8). He was the team’s top performer in three events over the fall, more than any other Crusader.
