LITCHFIELD, N.H. - Freshman Mike McCarthy (Tolland, Conn.) shot a team-best 150, placing sixth overall to lead the Holy Cross men's golf team to a fourth place finish at the SNHU Penmen Invitational at the Passaconway Country Club on Sunday and Monday. McCarthy shot a 73 in the first round and a 77 in the second round to earn the team's top performance for the second straight time. The Crusaders finished with 629 strokes over the two-day event.
Also marking a solid outing for the Crusaders was junior Colin Andrade (Assonet, Mass.), who shot a low-round of 75 in the second day of action to finish in a tie for 13th and second on the team with a two-round score of 158. Freshman Steve Zychowski (Mendham, N.J.) followed with a 161 (78, 83), tying for 17th. Rounding out the competition for Holy Cross were juniors James Widman (Middlebury, Conn.) who shot a 163 (79, 84), placing 19th and Tim McGovern (Oradell, N.J.) who finished in a tie for 20th with a 164 (83, 81).
Invitational host Southern New Hampshire won the competition with 610 strokes and had three finishers in the top five, including sophomore Shane Winslow who took the individual crown with a 146 (72, 74). Massachusetts-Lowell (613), Manhattan (624, Holy Cross (629), Assumption (635) and Franklin Pierce (638) finished second through sixth respectively.
The Crusaders follow up with their first dual-match of the season against St. Anselm on Sunday, Oct. 18. The match will take place at the Marshfield Country Club in Marshfield, Mass., with tee time at 9:00 a.m.
