WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross senior tailback Steve Silva (East Providence, R.I.) has been selected to the official Walter Payton Award Watch List, it was announced today by the Sports Network. The Walter Payton Award is presented annually by the Sports Network to the top player in Division I-AA football, and will be awarded for the 19th time at the annual Division I-AA College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 15 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Through six games this season, Silva ranks second in all of Division I-AA with an average of 190.0 all-purpose yards per game. He has rushed for 468 yards and six touchdowns on 105 carries, caught 34 passes for 232 yards and a score, returned nine kickoffs for 248 yards and a touchdown, and brought back 13 punts for 192 yards and a score. Silva has also become the first player in Holy Cross history to throw a touchdown pass, and also score touchdowns on a rush, a reception, a kickoff return and a punt return.
Over the course of his four-year career as a Crusader, Silva has rushed for 2,201 yards and 28 touchdowns on 531 carries, while catching 134 passes for 1,058 yards and two scores, becoming the first player in school history to record 2,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards. He currently ranks second all-time at Holy Cross in career rushing touchdowns, third in total touchdowns scored (32), fourth in all-purpose yards (4,159), fifth in rushing yards and sixth in receptions.
The Payton Watch list will undergo two additional revisions prior to the distribution of ballots on Nov. 21. The next change will be made on Nov. 2, and the final changes will be made just prior to the distribution of ballots. The 16 players who appear on the final list will be placed on the official Walter Payton Award ballots.
Holy Cross (4-2 overall, 2-0 Patriot League) plays its next game this Saturday, Oct. 15, when it plays host to Dartmouth (1-3 overall, 0-2 Ivy League) in a 1:00 p.m. contest at Fitton Field.
