WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross senior cornerback Casey Gough (Hinsdale, Ill.) has been named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week, for his performance in Saturday's 27-0 victory at Marist. Gough led a Crusader defense which held the Red Foxes to just 265 yards of total offense and 14 first downs, in addition to posting only the second shutout by a Patriot League team this season.
In the Marist game, Gough recorded five solo tackles, to go along with two tackles for loss, a forced fumble and an interception. His interception came on Marist's initial drive of the game, setting up Holy Cross' first touchdown by giving the Crusaders possession at the 50-yard line. Gough then forced a fumble on the Red Foxes' next possession, and had a key tackle for loss to halt a drive in the second quarter, after Marist had advanced the ball into Holy Cross territory.
On the season, Gough now ranks fifth on the team with 14 total tackles, including 12 solo stops and two tackles for loss. He also has a team-best three pass breakups, along with an interception and a forced fumble. Over the course of his career as a Crusader, Gough has totaled 107 total tackles, five interceptions and 17 pass breakups.
Holy Cross (2-2 overall, 1-0 Patriot League) returns to action this Saturday, Sept. 30, when it plays host to Fordham (1-2 overall, 0-0 Patriot League) in a 1:00 p.m. game on Homecoming Weekend.
