WORCESTER - Eight members of the Holy Cross football team have been named preseason All-Patriot League by I-AA.org, it was announced today. Senior center David Cannon (Export, Pa.), senior tight end Luke Dugan (Maple Plain, Minn.), senior wide receiver Sean Gruber (Richwood, Ky.) and senior tailback Steve Silva (East Providence, R.I.) were all chosen to the first team. In addition, junior placekicker Mike DeSantis (Belle Mead, N.J.), junior cornerback/kick returner Casey Gough (Hinsdale, Ill.), senior offensive guard Justin LaGrenade (Gaithersburg, Md.) and junior offensive tackle Andrew Schoepfer (Waterford, Conn.) were selected to the second team.
Holy Cross' four first team selections were tied for the second most in the league, behind only Lehigh with six. The Crusaders' total of eight total players on the teams also tied for the second most in the conference, trailing just Lafayette with nine.
Last year, Silva led the team in both rushing yards and receptions, totaling 708 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 161 carries, while catching 60 passes for 507 yards and a score. Gruber had 48 catches for a team-best 720 yards and eight touchdowns in 2004, while Dugan caught 17 passes for 202 yards and three scores.
Cannon, LaGrenade and Schoepfer were all starters on last season's offensive line, which allowed Holy Cross to average 334.9 yards and 21.8 points per game. DeSantis connected on seven of 10 field goal attempts for 29 of 30 extra point tries for 50 total points in 2004, while Gough recorded 47 total tackles and led the team with an average of 28.9 yards per kickoff return last year.
Holy Cross returns 17 of 22 position starters from its 2004 squad which finished with an overall record of 3-8 and a 1-5 mark in the Patriot League. The Crusaders are scheduled to open the 2005 season when they play host to Sacred Heart in a 1:00 p.m. game on Saturday, September 3.
