Sean Gruber Shares Daniel Allen Sportsmanship Award

May 6, 2006

WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior wide receiver Sean Gruber (Richwood, Ky.), a member of the football team, and senior designated hitter Keith Simard (Woodville, Mass.), a member of the baseball team, have been selected as the recipients of the 2005-2006 Daniel Allen Sportsmanship Award. The award was presented at the 52nd Annual Varsity Club Dinner, held at the Hogan Campus Center on Saturday, May 6.

The Allen Award was established in 2005, and is presented to the Holy Cross varsity athlete who best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship that coach Allen exhibited throughout his life.

After not playing in any games during his freshman year and fighting through back injuries, Gruber finished his career as Holy Cross' all-time leader with 22 touchdown receptions, while totaling 122 catches for 1,871 yards. An outstanding team player, Gruber also helped the 2005 Crusaders to the school's first winning season since 2000.

Simard came to Holy Cross as a pitcher, but saw limited action during his first three seasons due to an elbow injury, and was eventually forced to have surgery. In 2006, he switched positions to designated hitter to help the team, and totaled 13 hits with a home run in 16 starts.
