David Kotulski joins the Holy Cross coaching staff this season as the defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach. He comes to the Crusaders from Utah State University, where he served as defensive coordinator for the last two seasons. During Kotulski's first season at Utah State in 2003, the Aggies placed 46th in the nation in total defense, improving from 111th in the year before his arrival for the second-biggest turnaround in the country. In 2004, Utah State forced over two turnovers per game, totaling 13 interceptions and 10 fumble recoveries on the season. Kotulski is very familiar with the Patriot League, having spent eight seasons at Bucknell University prior to his time at Utah State. He served as the Bison's defensive coordinator from 1995-2001, before taking over as interim head coach for the 2002 season. During his time at Bucknell, his teams allowed just 16.9 points and 290 yards per game, while averaging 34 sacks and 26 turnovers per season. Kotulski helped lead the Bison to the 1996 Patriot League title, and coached five first team All-Americans during his eight years. Overall, Bucknell posted a mark of 50-37 with Kotulski on the staff, while having a winning record in seven out of eight seasons. In addition, the Bison were nationally ranked in six of Kotulski's eight seasons, while ranking either first or second in the Patriot League in total defense every year. Kotulski previously served as the defensive coordinator at St. Mary's College (Calif.) from 1990-1994, helping the Gaels to an overall mark of 31-18-1, including a winning record during each of his five seasons on the staff. During Kotulski's five years as defensive coordinator, St. Mary's allowed an average of only 18 points per game. Prior to his time at St. Mary's, Kotulski served as the defensive line and linebackers coach at the University of Utah from 1978-1989. Among the players he coached at Utah was defensive tackle Steve Clark, who earned first team All-America honors and was the MVP of the Senior Bowl in 1981. Kotulski, who began his coaching career as an assistant at St. Paul High School in Santa Fe Sprin, Calif. (1975-1977), has worked with a number of top coaches over the course of his career, including Jim Fassell, John Fox and Pat Hill. A 1975 graduate of New Mexico State University, Kotulski played linebacker and center during his days as an undergraduate. He and his wife, Cissy, have two children (Davey and Carey).
