Acquah To Receive Daniel Allen Sportsmanship Award
WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior defensive lineman Gary Acquah (Bronx, N.Y.), a member of the Holy Cross football team, has been selected as the 2013-2014 winner of the Daniel Allen Sportsmanship Award. Presented by the Holy Cross Varsity Club, the Allen Award goes to the player whose unselfish teamwork and dedication to the good of the team reflect the values lived by coach Allen. The winning student-athlete need not be a star or even a starter, but a solid performer with an outstanding attitude whose contributions are not frequently recognized. The award is designed to recognize a student athlete who is dedicated to the good of the team, possesses integrity, and is a great teammate.
After earning All-Patriot League honors during his junior season, Acquah was elected as one of the team's captains for the 2013 campaign. But during his senior year, he suffered from a back condition which limited his athleticism and would sometimes make him unable to practice. Acquah still found a way to be a positive influence on the team, always being there to support and encourage his teammates instead of dwelling on his own misfortune. Despite his physical setbacks, he always found a way to take the field on game days, and finished his senior season with 45 total tackles.
Acquah's positive attitude was not limited to the football field, as he always took the time to be a positive voice and role model while serving others. He has been active in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Massachusetts, in addition to participating in Holy Cross Cares Day and the football team's annual Bone Marrow Registry Drive. Acquah is also the co-founder and vice president of Hope for Us Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting youth with sickle cell anemia.
Acquah will be presented with the Allen Award at the 59th annual Holy Cross Varsity Club Hall of Fame Dinner & Ceremonial Banquet, to be held on Saturday, May 3, at 5:00 p.m. in the Hogan Campus Center. Tickets are still available for event for only $60.00. For more information or to purchase tickets, please contact Varsity Club Treasurer Tony Froio at email@example.com.
