Football Names 2014 Team Captains
WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior strong safety Matt Bhaya (Haddonfield, N.J.), senior running back Michael O'Dwyer (Denver, Colo.) and sophomore quarterback Peter Pujals (Glenview, Ill.) will serve as the captains of the 2014 Holy Cross football team, as announced by head coach Tom Gilmore. These three players were selected as captains in voting by the team.
Bhaya started all 12 games at strong safety for Holy Cross during the 2013 campaign. He ranked second on the team with 71 total tackles, including 65 solo stops and two tackles for loss, while leading the team in tackles twice and reaching double-figures in tackles two times. Bhaya also had a team-high nine pass breakups a year ago, in addition to tying for the team lead with two interceptions. He finished the 2013 season ranked fifth in the Patriot League in passes defended and 17th in total tackles. In 23 career games played, Bhaya has now recorded 79 total tackles.
O'Dwyer played in 11 games for the Crusaders as a fullback and tight end last year, starting four times. He was a key blocker for an offense which averaged 27.0 points, 155.0 rushing yards and 395.3 total yards per game during the 2013 season. O'Dwyer also helped the Crusaders finish with 1,860 rushing yards as a team in 2013, their highest total since running for 1,927 yards in 1991. In 22 career games played, including seven starts, O'Dwyer has caught four passes for 18 yards and carried the ball once for three yards.
Pujals saw action in 10 games last season with eight starts, and was named the 2013 Patriot League Rookie of the Year. He connected on 211 of 332 pass attempts for 2,261 yards and 19 touchdowns, in addition to running the ball 136 times for 469 yards and eight more scores. Pujals broke the Holy Cross freshman records for completions, pass attempts, passing yards, yards of total offense (2,730) and touchdowns responsible for (27), while tying the freshman mark for touchdown passes. He also finished the year ranked second in the Patriot League in total offense, while standing third in passing yards and pass efficiency (134.8 rating).
The Crusaders will open the 2014 season when they travel to Albany on Saturday, August 30.
