Football Places Three On Academic All-Patriot League Team

WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross senior wide receiver Mike Fess (Caldwell, N.J.), junior free safety Sam Jones (Canal Winchester, Ohio) and senior placekicker and punter John Macomber (Vienna, Va.) have been selected to the 2013 Academic All-Patriot League team for football, as announced by the conference office. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic standing with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, and be a starter or key reserve.

Fess was also named second team All-Patriot League this season for the second time in his career, after previously being honored in 2011. He played in all 12 games this year at wide receiver, starting 11 times. Fess led the team with 75 receptions for 893 yards and nine touchdowns, and ranked second on the team in scoring with 54 points. He placed fourth on the Holy Cross single-season list for receptions, sixth for touchdown catches and eighth for receiving yards, in addition to ranking fifth in the Patriot League in receptions and seventh in receiving yards. Over the course of his career with the Crusaders, Fess totaled 209 catches for 2,211 yards and 15 scores. He finished his collegiate career as Holy Cross' all-time leader in receptions, while standing fourth in receiving yards. In the classroom, he owns a cumulative grade point average of 3.37 with a major in history.

Jones earns Academic All-Patriot League honors for the second time in his career, after previously making the team in 2012. He played in all seven games for Holy Cross at free safety this year, starting six times. Jones ranked ninth on the team with 34 total tackles, even though he missed five games due to injury. He also recorded one quarterback sack, three tackles for loss, three quarterback hurries, one pass breakup and one fumble recovery this season. Over the course of his career with the Crusaders, Jones has now totaled 67 tackles and four pass breakups in 22 games played. In the classroom, he owns a cumulative grade point average of 3.68 with a major in political science.

Macomber makes the Academic All-Patriot League team for the third time in his career, after previously being chosen in 2011 and 2012. He has also been selected second team All-Patriot League as both a punter (2012 and 2013) and a placekicker (2012). Macomber played in all 12 games this year, averaging 40.8 yards on 51 punts, with 14 fair catches and 14 kicks downed inside the opponents' 20-yard line. He also scored 56 points, hitting seven of 10 field goal attempts and 35 of 39 extra points, and averaged 61.9 yards on 55 kickoffs with 21 touchbacks. Over the course of his career as a Crusader, Macomber made 29 of 38 field goals and 80 of 91 extra points for 167 points, while averaging 40.8 yards on 113 punts with 37 kicks downed inside the 20. He finished his career as Holy Cross' all-time leader in career punting average, while ranking third in field goals made and sixth in extra points made. In the classroom, Macomber carries a cumulative grade point average of 3.73 with a major in History.

Holy Cross concluded the 2013 season with an overall record of 3-9, and tied for fifth in the Patriot League with a 1-4 mark in conference games.
