Pujals Named Patriot League Rookie Of The Year

\WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross freshman quarterback Peter Pujals (Glenview, Ill.) has been selected as the 2013 Patriot League Rookie of the Year. In addition, three other Crusaders have received All-Patriot League football honors. Senior wide receiver Mike Fess (Caldwell, N.J.), senior punter John Macomber (Vienna, Va.) and senior offensive tackle Kyle Pedretty (Dunedin, Fla.) were all named second team all-conference.

Pujals saw action in 10 games at quarterback this season, starting eight times. He connected on 211 of 332 pass attempts for 2,261 yards and 19 touchdowns, in addition to running the ball 136 times for 469 yards and eight more scores. Pujals broke the Holy Cross freshman records for completions, pass attempts, passing yards, yards of total offense (2,730) and touchdowns responsible for (27), while tying the freshman mark for touchdown passes. He also finished the year ranked second in the Patriot League in passing yards and total offense, while standing third in pass efficiency (134.8 rating).

Fess earns All-Patriot League honors for the second time, after being a second team selection in 2011. He played in all 12 games this year at wide receiver, starting 11 times. Fess led the team with 75 receptions for 893 yards and nine touchdowns, and ranked second on the team in scoring with 54 points. He placed fourth on the Holy Cross single-season list for receptions, sixth for touchdown catches and eighth for receiving yards, in addition to ranking  fifth in the Patriot League in receptions and seventh in receiving yards. Over the course of his career with the Crusaders, Fess totaled 209 catches for 2,211 yards and 15 scores. He finished his collegiate career as Holy Cross' all-time leader in receptions, while standing fourth in receiving yards.

Macomber receives All-Patriot League honors for the second straight year, after being selected to the second team as both a punter and a placekicker in 2012. He played in all 12 games this year, averaging 40.8 yards on 51 punts, with 14 fair catches and 14 kicks downed inside the opponents' 20-yard line. Macomber also scored 56 points, hitting seven of 10 field goal attempts and 35 of 39 extra points, and averaged 61.9 yards on 55 kickoffs with 21 touchbacks. Over the course of his career as a Crusader, Macomber made 29 of 38 field goals and 80 of 91 extra points for 167 points, while averaging 40.8 yards on 113 punts with 37 kicks downed inside the 20. He finished his career as Holy Cross' all-time leader in career punting average, while ranking third in field goals made and sixth in extra points made.

Pedretty played in all 12 games this season, starting 10 times at left tackle and twice at right tackle. He was a key part of an offensive line which paved the way for the Crusaders to average 395.3 total yards, 155.0 rushing yards and 27.0 point per game on the year. Pedretty and the offensive line also allowed just 29 sacks this year, while the team attempted 434 passes. Over the course of his collegiate career, Pedretty played in 35 career games with 34 starts.

Holy Cross concluded the 2013 season with an overall record of 3-9, and tied for fifth in the Patriot League with a 1-4 mark in conference games.
