BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Freshman tailback Gabe Guild (Overland Park, Kan.) scored two touchdowns, but the Holy Cross football team was defeated by No. 21 Lehigh 34-20 at Goodman Stadium. Guild carried the ball eight times for 60 yards and two scores, in addition to catching a pass for six yards. The Crusaders fall to 3-8 overall and 1-3 in the Patriot League with the loss, while Lehigh improves to 7-2 on the season and 2-1 in the conference.
Freshman quarterback Peter Pujals (Glenview, Ill.) completed 30 of 42 passes for 269 yards and one touchdown on the day, while senior wide receiver Nate Stanley (Euclid, Ohio) had seven receptions for 90 yards. The Mountain Hawks were led by Keith Sherman, who rushed 20 times for 166 yards and a score, while catching two passes for 30 yards and two more touchdowns.
Lehigh opened the scoring at the 10:50-mark of the first quarter on a two-yard touchdown run by Matt McHale. Holy Cross tied the score at 7-7 on a 48-yard scoring run by Guild.
Sherman ran 60 yards for a touchdown for the Mountain Hawks early in the second quarter, before Guild scored his second touchdown of the day on a two-yard run to tie the game at 13-13. But Nick Shafnisky added a five-yard scoring run and a 19-yard touchdown pass to Sherman late in the quarter, giving Lehigh a 27-13 halftime lead.
Shafnisky connected with Sherman on a 11-yard scoring strike in the third quarter to give Lehigh a 34-13 lead. Pujals threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver Mike Fess (Caldwell, N.J.) to make the score 34-20, but neither team would score again as the Mountain Hawks held on for the victory.
Fess finished the game with eight catches for 62 yards and a score, to become the seventh player in Patriot League history with 200 career receptions (now standing at 202).
Following a bye next week Holy Cross will conclude the regular season with a home game against Georgetown on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 12:30 p.m.
