Crusaders Edged By Brown 24-21
WORCESTER, Mass. – Brown tailback Spiro Theodhosi carried the ball 20 times for 120 yards, to lead the Bears to a 24-21 victory over the Holy Cross football team at Fitton Field. The Crusaders held a 21-10 lead at the start of the fourth quarter, before Brown rallied with two long touchdown drives to earn the win. Holy Cross falls to 0-2 on the season with the loss, while the Bears open the year at 1-0.
Senior strong safety Tom Mannix (Kenilworth, N.J.) led the Holy Cross defense with 14 solo tackles and an interception, while junior linebacker Scotty O'Donoghue (Tampa, Fla.) added 11 tackles and a pass breakup. Senior quarterback Kevin Watson (Belle Mead, N.J.) also had a fine day by completing 26 of 40 passes for 223 yards and a touchdown, while rushing nine times for 24 yards and a score. Brown quarterback Patrick Donnelly completed 24 of 41 passes on the afternoon for 199 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Bears opened the scoring with a 24-yard field goal by Alexander Norocea with 13:08 left to play before the half. The Crusaders then drove 73 yards in 14 plays on their next drive, while Watson scoring on a one-yard run to make the score 7-3 at the break.
Holy Cross increased its lead to 14-3 early in the third quarter on a six-yard touchdown pass from Watson to senior tight end Alex Schneider (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.). Brown responded with a 38-yard scoring strike from Donnelly to Tellef Lundevall, before a one-yard touchdown run by senior tailback Eddie Houghton (Toronto, Ontario) put the Crusaders up 21-10 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Bears would drive 75 yards in 13 plays on their next possession, with Donnelly throwing a two-yard touchdown pass to Jonah Fay. Donnelly then capped a 13-play, 84-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown run, to put the Bears back in front 24-21 with just 1:24 remaining. Four plays into the next possession, Brown's A.J. Cruz intercepted a Holy Cross pass to put the game away.
Holy Cross returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 22, when it plays host to Dartmouth in its Homecoming game at 1:00 p.m.
