Holy Cross Football Names 2012 Team Captains

WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior strong safety Tom Mannix (Kenilworth, N.J.), senior wide receiver Gerald Mistretta (Brooklyn, N.Y.), senior linebacker Roman SanDoval (Allison Park, Pa.) and senior center Sean Whited (Canton, Ohio) will serve as the captains of the 2012 Holy Cross football team, as announced by head coach Tom Gilmore. These four players were selected as captains in voting by the team.

Mannix earned second team All-Patriot League honors last season, after starting all 11 of Holy Cross' games at strong safety. He ranked second on the team with 87 total tackles last year, including 71 solo stops and one tackle for loss. Mannix also finished the season with 10 pass breakups, three forced fumbles, an interception and a fumble recovery. He ended the year ranked second in the conference in forced fumbles, fourth in passes defended and eighth in total tackles. Over the course of his collegiate career, Mannix has now totaled 138 tackles, 16 pass breakups, two interceptions and four forced fumbles in 34 games played.

Mistretta was named first team All-Patriot League in 2011, after playing in all 11 games at wide receiver with five starts. He caught 60 passes on the year for 723 yards and six touchdowns, to lead the team in all three categories. Mistretta also rushed the ball four times for 16 yards, returned two kickoffs for 35 yards and made 13 tackles on special teams. He finished the year ranked third in the Patriot League in both receptions and receiving yards, while standing seventh in all-purpose yards. Over the course of his collegiate career, Mistretta has now made 94 receptions for 1,228 yards and 10 scores in 34 games played.

SanDoval played in the first three games of the 2011 season at inside linebacker, before missing the remainder of the year due to injury. In his limited action last season, he totaled 15 tackles, one quarterback sack and two tackles for loss. SanDoval previously made 34 tackles during the 2010 campaign, including a career-high 11 tackles against both Harvard and Massachusetts. Over the course of his collegiate career, he has now recorded 55 tackles, one sack and three tackles for loss in 24 games played.

Whited earned second team All-Patriot League honors last year, after starting all 11 games for the Crusaders at center. He was a key part of an offensive line which paved the way for Holy Cross to average 22.9 points and 400.9 yards of total offense per game in 2011. Whited and the offensive line also allowed just 21 sacks last year, while the team attempted 431 passes (just one sack for every 21.5 times the team dropped back to pass). During his time at Holy Cross, Whited has now played in 23 career games with 19 starts along the offensive line.

The Crusaders will open the 2012 season when they play host to New Hampshire on Thursday, August 30.
