Three Crusaders Named To Academic All-Patriot League Team

WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross sophomore placekicker John Macomber (Vienna, Va.), senior offensive tackle Mike McCabe (Watertown, Conn.) and junior strong safety Tom Mannix (Kenilworth, N.J.) have been selected to the 2011 Academic All-Patriot League team for football, as announced by the conference office. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic standing with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, and be a starter or key player.

Macomber appeared in 10 games for the Crusaders this year, as both a placekicker and kickoff specialist. He connected on 12 of 15 field goal attempts and 20 of 26 extra points for a team-best 56 points scored, while averaging 58.2 yards on 21 kickoffs. Macomber tied the school single-season record of 12 field goals made (which had previously been done five other times), and ranked third in the Patriot League and 28th in the nation in field goals made. In the classroom, Macomber carries a cumulative grade point average of 3.60 with a major in History.

McCabe earns Academic All-Patriot League honors for the second year in a row. He was also selected to first team All-Patriot League in 2011, marking his third consecutive appearance on the All-Conference team. McCabe was previously named first team All-Patriot League in 2010 and second team All-Conference in 2009. He started all 11 games for the Crusaders at left tackle this season, as the leader of an offensive line which paved the way for Holy Cross to average 22.9 points and 400.9 yards of total offense per game. McCabe and the offensive line also allowed just 21 sacks this year, while the team attempted 431 passes (just one sack for every 21.5 times the team dropped back to pass). He is also a three-time ESPN / CoSIDA Academic All-District selection for his work in the classroom. During his time at Holy Cross, McCabe played in 47 career games with 36 starts along the offensive line, including a streak of 34 consecutive starts to end his career. In the classroom, he owns a cumulative grade point average of 3.62 with a major in Classics.

Mannix started all 11 of Holy Cross' games this season at strong safety, and earned second team All-Patriot League honors. He ranked second on the team with 87 total tackles this year, including 71 solo stops and one tackle for loss. Mannix also finished the season with 10 pass breakups, three forced fumbles, an interception and a fumble recovery. He ended the year ranked second in the conference in forced fumbles, fifth in passes defended and eighth in total tackles. Over the course of his collegiate career, Mannix has now totaled 138 tackles, 16 pass breakups, two interceptions and four forced fumbles. In the classroom, he carries a cumulative grade point average of 3.33 with a major in Political Science.

The Crusaders finished the 2011 campaign with an overall record of 6-5, while placing second in the Patriot League with a 3-2 mark in conference games. Holy Cross also posted a winning record for the seventh straight season.
