Crusaders Name 2011 Team Captains
WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior offensive tackle Mike McCabe (Watertown, Conn.), senior linebacker Ricky Otis (Cleves, Ohio) and senior quarterback Mark Tolzien (Rolling Meadows, Ill.) will serve as the captains of the 2011 Holy Cross football team, it was announced by head coach Tom Gilmore. These three players were selected as captains in voting by the team.
McCabe was named first team All-Patriot League and first team All-New England last season, after receiving second team All-Patriot League honors in 2009. He started all 11 games for the Crusaders at left tackle last season, as the leader of an offensive line which paved the way for Holy Cross to average 22.6 points and 323.1 yards of total offense per game. McCabe and the offensive line also allowed just 17 sacks last year, while the team attempted 418 passes (just one sack for every 25.6 times the team dropped back to pass). Over the course of his collegiate career, McCabe has played in 36 games with 25 starts along the offensive line.
Otis earned first team All-Patriot League honors in 2010, after playing in nine games at inside linebacker and starting every time. Despite missing two games early in the year due to injury, he led the team with 108 total tackles, including 74 solo stops and two tackles for loss. Otis also registered a forced fumble, a pass breakup and two fumble recoveries last season. He led the Patriot League in tackles and ranked second in fumble recoveries, while reaching double-figures in tackles seven times. Over the course of his collegiate career, Otis has now totaled 135 tackles in 28 games played.
Tolzien played in four games at quarterback during the 2010 campaign, completing 16 of 25 passes for 147 yards and two touchdowns. He connected on four of five attempts for 33 yards and two scores during the victory at Colgate, in addition to throwing for 57 yards against Lehigh and 43 yards in the win over Bucknell. Tolzien was also selected to the 2010 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
The Crusaders will open the 2011 season when they play host to Massachusetts on Thursday, September 1.
