Football Picked First In Patriot League Preseason Poll
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Holy Cross football team has been picked to finish in first place in the Patriot League this season, in the conference's preseason poll of head coaches and sports information directors. The announcement came at the league's annual football media day in Bethlehem, Pa.
The Crusaders topped the poll with a total of 67 points and seven first place votes, while Colgate placed second with 64 points and six first place votes. Lafayette (46 points) and Lehigh (46 points, one first place vote) tied for third in the poll, followed by Fordham (fifth, 35 points), Bucknell (sixth, 24 points) and Georgetown (seventh, 12 points).
In addition to the preseason poll, the Patriot League announced its preseason players of the year. Holy Cross senior quarterback Dominic Randolph (Amelia, Ohio) was named the preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while senior linebacker Mark Leggiero of Lafayette was chosen as the preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
Holy Cross returns 15 of 22 starters from its 2008 squad which finished with an overall record of 7-4 and a 5-1 mark in the Patriot League. The Crusaders are scheduled to open the 2009 season when they play host to Georgetown in a 1:00 p.m. game on Saturday, September 5.
