WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross freshman guard R.J. Evans (Salem, Conn.) has been named the Patriot League Anaconda Rookie of the Week, for competition from Nov. 10-16. Evans helped lead the Crusader men's basketball team to victories over Sacred Heart (67-58) and St. Joseph's (73-69 in overtime) in its first two games of the 2008-2009 season.
Against Sacred Heart on Friday night, Evans led the team in scoring with 15 points on seven of 12 shooting from the field. He scored the most points by a Holy Cross player in his collegiate debut since Torey Thomas had 18 points against Boston University on Nov. 22, 2003, and was also the first Crusader to lead the team in scoring in his first collegiate game since Thomas. Evans also recorded 12 points on six of 12 shooting in the St. Joseph's game.
In two games played so far this season, Evans leads the team in scoring with an average of 13.5 points per game. He is also shooting a team-best 54.2 percent from the field.
Holy Cross (2-0 overall) returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 19, when it plays host to Brown at 7:00 p.m.
