ANDORRA LA VELLA, Andorra - The Holy Cross men's basketball team posted a 69-66 victory over Sabadell Basket on Monday, in a contest which was played in Andorra. Sabadell is a professional team from Barcelona, Spain, which competes in Division 3.
Sabadell came out sizzling from the three-point line in the first half, hitting six of nine shots from behind the arc, and took a 35-27 lead into break. Holy Cross clamped down in the third quarter, holding Sabadell to just one field goal in the period to take a 50-49 lead. Sabadell had a 65-59 lead with 2:58 remaining in the game, but after a Crusader time out, senior center Tim Clifford (Walpole, Mass.) hit a three-pointer, then after a Sabadell turnover junior forward Colin Cunningham (Memphis, Tenn.) hit a driving lay up to cut the lead to one point. After another turnover by Sabadell, Cunningham found junior guard Lawrence Dixon (Columbia, Md.) in the corner for a three-pointer to give the Crusaders the lead for good, 67-65. After Sabadell made one of two shots from the line, Dixon knocked down two free throws with three seconds to go. Sabadell could not get a shot off before the horn sounded as the Crusaders prevailed 69-66.
Clifford led the Crusaders with 14 points and five boards. Colin Cunningham and Lawrence Dixon each had 11 points, and Eric Meister finished with 10 points and a game high seven rebounds. Holy Cross was blistering from the foul line going 25 for 29 for the game and turned Sabadell over 24 times on the night.
The Crusaders are scheduled to conclude their European tour on Thursday, August 23, when they will play a game against a Spanish Division 2 squad in Barcelona.
