WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior guard Kevin Hamilton (Queens Village, N.Y.) has been named the 2004-2005 Patriot League Player of the Year in men's basketball. Hamilton was also selected first team All-Patriot League, along with sophomore guard Keith Simmons (Kingston, N.Y.). In addition, freshman guard Pat Doherty (Scranton, Pa.) was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Year and to the Patriot League All-Rookie team, while head coach Ralph Willard has received Patriot League Coach of the Year honors.
Hamilton led the team and ranked second in the Patriot League with an average of 15.2 points per game this season, in addition to posting a league-best 3.0 steals per contest. He also placed second on the team with averages of 5.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game, marks which ranked sixth and seventh in the conference, respectively. Hamilton, who hit a league-high 68 three-point field goals on the year, scored in double figures 24 times in 27 games this season, while leading the Crusaders in scoring 17 times. He has set a new Holy Cross single season record with 80 steals on the year, needing 14 more to set a Patriot League record.
Simmons ranked second on the team and eighth in the league in scoring with an average of 12.6 points per game. He led the team in both three-point field goal percentage (43.7 percent, 45 of 103) and field goal percentage (52.0 percent, 116 of 223), while placing second and third in the conference, respectively. Simmons, who also ranked among the team's leaders in rebounds (4.3 per game) and steals (1.6 per game), led the Crusaders in scoring seven times this year. He was particularly effective against Patriot League foes, averaging 13.8 points and 5.1 rebounds in conference games.
Doherty averaged 4.6 points, 2.3 assists, 1.1 rebounds and 1.0 steals on the year for the Crusaders, while shooting 41.4 percent from three-point range (24 of 58) and 72.4 percent at the foul line (21 of 29). He was even more effective in conference games, averaging 6.8 points, 2.8 assists, 1.6 rebounds and 1.5 steals against Patriot League foes. Doherty was a two-time Patriot League Rookie of the Week selection on Jan. 24 and Jan. 31. During the five games Holy Cross played during those two weeks, Doherty averaged 11.2 points, 4.2 assists and 2.8 steals per contest, while shooting 47.2 percent from the floor.
Willard earns Patriot League Coach of the Year honors for the second time in the last five years, after previously taking home the award in 2001. He has led the Crusaders to an overall mark on 22-5 and a 13-1 record in Patriot League action this year, tying the conference record for most regular season league wins in a single season. The team has also won the Patriot League regular season title outright for the third time during Willard's six seasons as head coach, after previously taking the crown in 2001 and 2003. Willard owns a mark of 111-66 during his time at Holy Cross, while his career record stands at 255-190, including five seasons at the University of Pittsburgh and four years at Western Kentucky University.
The Patriot League regular season champion, Holy Cross (22-5, 13-1 Patriot League) returns to action on Friday, March 4, when it plays host to Army in a quarterfinal round game of the Patriot League Tournament. The contest between the Crusaders and the Black Knights is scheduled to tip-off at 8:00 p.m. at the Hart Center.
