WORCESTER, Mass. - Holy Cross freshman guard R.J. Evans (Salem, Conn.) has been named the Patriot League Anaconda Rookie of the Week, for competition from Jan. 26-Feb. 1. This marks the eighth time this season Evans has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, after previously winning the award on Nov. 17, Dec. 8, Dec. 15, Dec. 29, Jan. 5, Jan. 19 and Jan. 26. Evans now has the third most Patriot League Rookie of the Week awards ever in a single season, trailing only Marquis Hall (Lehigh, 2006-2007) and Kevin Bettencourt (Bucknell, 2002-2003) with nine each.
In Wednesday's 68-44 victory over Colgate, Evans totaled 12 points, four steals and two rebounds. Then during Saturday's 67-52 win at Lehigh, he posted a team-high 15 points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists. Over the course of the two games, Evans averaged 13.5 points, 3.5 steals and 3.0 rebounds, while hitting 77.8 percent (seven of nine) of his free throw attempts.
Overall this season, Evans leads the team in scoring with an average of 13.4 points per game, to go along with 5.0 rebounds and 1.8 steals per contest. He has scored in double-figures 17 times this year, including 14 times in the last 16 games.
Holy Cross (11-11 overall, 6-1 Patriot League) returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 7, when it travels to Lafayette for a 1:00 p.m. game.
