WORCESTER, Mass. - Freshman guard Pat Doherty (Scranton, Pa.), a member of the Holy Cross men's basketball team, has been named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week, for games from Jan. 17-23. Doherty is the first Crusader to earn Rookie of the Week honors from the conference office this season.
Doherty averaged 11.5 points, 7.0 assists and 3.5 steals per game last week, while making the first two starts of his collegiate career, as Holy Cross posted a pair of victories over Iona (78-53 on Jan. 18) and Navy (79-56 on Jan. 21). In the Iona game, he recorded a career-high eight assists, in addition to totaling seven points and two steals. Against Navy, Doherty scored a career-high 16 points, while also to handing out six assists and collecting five steals. Over the course of the two games, he shot 46.2 percent from the field (six of 13), 50.0 percent from three-point range (four of eight) and 77.8 percent at the free throw line (seven of nine).
Through 18 games played this season, Doherty is now averaging 4.7 points, 2.3 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.1 rebounds per game, while shooting 44.6 percent from the floor, 47.2 percent from three-point range and 70.8 percent at the foul line. He has played particularly well against Patriot League opponents, averaging 11.2 points, 3.6 assists, 2.8 steals and 2.2 rebounds per contest in conference games.
Holy Cross, which stands 13-5 overall and 4-1 in the Patriot League this year, returns to action on Friday, Jan. 28, when it travels to Lafayette (5-13 overall, 1-4 Patriot League) for a 7:00 p.m. game.
