WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - John Hurley scored 18 points for Holy Cross to lead four players in double figures as the Crusaders defeated Northeastern 82-76 on Monday night.
Holy Cross (5-3) led 53-38 midway through the second half.
Adrian Martinez, who scored 16 points, keyed a rally as Northeastern cut the lead to 59-57 late in the game. But Holy Cross guards Torey Thomas and Keith Simmons kept the Crusaders ahead as they pulled away to the win.
Shawn James had 20 points for Northeastern (4-5), but the NCAA's fifth leading scorer, Northeastern's Jose Juan Barea, was limited to 12 points on 4-of-22 shooting. Barea was averaging 24 points coming into the game.
After Marcus Barnes' second 3-point field goal cut the Crusaders' lead to 22-20, Holy Cross went on a 9-2 run with Hurley scoring twice. Northeastern then surged ahead with a 14-5 run. James had six points and Barea added five as James tied it 36-36 with 2:03 left in the half.
Hurley's two baskets gave Holy Cross a 40-36 lead at halftime.
The Crusaders came out strong in the second half with Thomas scoring five quick points. Holy Cross extended the lead to 53-38 with 15:10 left.
Northeastern surged, cutting the lead to two points twice, the last time when Barea converted two free throws to bring Northeastern within 59-57 with 7:28 left.
