PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Senior center Tim Clifford (Walpole, Mass.) and junior forward Alex Vander Baan (Uxbridge, Mass.) both had 16 points and seven rebounds, to lead the Holy Cross men's basketball team to a 71-66 victory over St. Joseph's at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. The Crusaders improve to 7-1 on the season with the victory, while the Hawks fall to 4-3 overall.
The Crusaders took control of the game from the opening tip, starting the game on a 12-0 run over the first seven minutes of play. Clifford scored six of his points during that spurt, while Vander Baan added four. The Holy Cross lead would grow as large as 18 points (27-9) with 3:23 left in the half, before St. Joseph's went on a 12-5 run to cut the gap to 11 points. The Crusaders eventually held a 34-21 advantage at the break.
The Holy Cross lead stayed in double figures early in the second half, before the Hawks finally closed to within nine points (51-42) with 10:45 left. The Crusaders built their lead back up to 13 points (62-49), but St. Joseph's then went on a 6-0 run to make things interesting. The Hawks eventually came as close as five points (66-61) with two minutes left to play, but the Crusaders would make five of seven free throws in the final minute to hold on for the victory.
Holy Cross shot 50.0 percent from the field (25 of 50) and 57.1 percent from three-point range (eight of 14), while turning the ball over just 11 times. The Crusaders also had 22 assists on their 25 made field goals.
Senior guard Kyle Cruze (Knoxville, Tenn.) totaled 13 points and a team-high six assists, while freshman guard Andrew Beinert (Floral Park, N.Y.) had a career-high 10 points and four assists. Pat Calathes led St. Joseph's with 19 points and five rebounds, and Tasheed Carr added 17 points and six rebounds for the Hawks.
The Crusaders will now take a break for final exams, before returning to action on Saturday, Dec. 22, at Siena.
