Dec. 2, 2006
DAYTON, Ohio -- Senior guard Keith Simmons (Kingston, N.Y.) totaled 15 points and seven rebounds, but it was not enough as the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by Dayton 69-53 at the University of Dayton Arena. The Crusaders fall to 6-2 on the season with the loss, while the Flyers improve to 6-1 overall.
The game was close in the early minutes of play, and the score was tied 11-11 at the 12:31-mark of the first half. Dayton then went on a 9-0 run over the next five minutes, to build a 20-11 lead. But Holy Cross came right back with a 12-0 spurt of its own to claim its first lead of the night, 23-20 with 3:58 remaining in the half. Simmons scored six of his points during that run, while senior guard Torey Thomas (White Plains, N.Y.) and sophomore guard Pat Doherty (Scranton, Pa.) both added three-point field goals. The Flyers were able to tie up the score three times in the closing minutes of the half, before the Crusaders took a 29-27 lead into the break.
Dayton then came out of the locker room on fire, opening the second half with a 13-3 run to reclaim the lead. Holy Cross was still down by just five points (42-37) with 11 minutes remaining in regulation, before the Flyers used a 9-1 spurt to put the game away. The Crusaders would get no closer than nine points the rest of the way, as Dayton eventually extended its lead to 16 points in the closing seconds.
Thomas finished the game with 13 points, four assists and three steals, while Doherty added nine points and three assists. Dayton was led by Norman Plummer with 19 points and four rebounds, while Charles Little chipped in with 16 points and three assists.
Holy Cross returns to action on Wednesday, December 6, when it travels to Duke. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m., in a game which will be shown on ESPN2.
