WORCESTER, Mass. -- Senior center Tim Clifford (Walpole, Mass.) totaled 20 points and four rebounds, but it was not enough as the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by Dayton 55-53 at the DCU Center. The Crusaders fall to 6-1 on the year with the loss, while the Flyers improve to 5-1.
The Crusaders opened the game on a 7-2 run, including five points from junior forward Alex Vander Baan (Uxbridge, Mass.). Holy Cross would increase its lead to six points (16-10) with 11 minutes left in the first half, before the Flyers went on a 10-2 run to claim their first lead of the game. Dayton eventually held a 26-25 advantage at the break.
The Flyers held a two-point lead (31-29) with 18 minutes remaining in regulation, when the Crusaders used an 11-2 spurt to claim their largest lead of the night, 40-33 with 10:40 left. But Holy Cross then went cold from the field, and Dayton went on a 15-1 run to take the lead for good. Clifford hit two three-pointers in the final 30 seconds to keep the Crusaders in the game, but Holy Cross was not able to get a shot off on its final possession as the Flyers held on to win by two.
Vander Baan finished the night with 11 points and a game-high seven rebounds for the Crusaders. Dayton was led by Jimmy Binnie with 13 points and six rebounds.
Holy Cross returns to action on Tuesday, December 4, when it travels to St. Joseph's for a 7:00 p.m. game.
