WORCESTER, Mass. -- Junior forward Alex Vander Baan (Uxbridge, Mass.) totaled 15 points and five rebounds, but it was not enough as the Holy Cross men's basketball team lost an exhibition game against Rhode Island College at the Hart Center, 61-60. Sophomore forward Adam May (Mentor, Ohio) added 14 points and four rebounds off the bench for the Crusaders.
Holy Cross held the lead for the majority of the game, before the Anchormen rallied to make things close in the final minutes. Cameron Stewart hit a three-pointer with 38 seconds left to play to give Rhode Island College its first lead of the second half, 59-58. Vander Baan then made a pair of free throws to put the Crusaders back on top, but Stewart would make a running layup in the lane with seven seconds left for the final points of the day. Holy Cross had one final possession, but was unable to convert as time expired.
With the game being an exhibition, the Crusaders allowed a number of young players to see considerable action. Eleven different players took part in the contest for Holy Cross, with 10 of them seeing at least 11 minutes of action.
Junior guard Pat Doherty (Scranton, Pa.) dished out a game-high 10 assists for the Crusaders, while senior center Tim Clifford (Walpole, Mass.) added nine points and three rebounds. Rhode Island College was led by Carlos Brown with 19 points and five steals, while Stewart added 15 points.
Holy Cross returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 6, when it plays host to UMass-Lowell in an exhibition game at 7:30 p.m.
