LEWISBURG, Pa. -- Senior center Tim Clifford (Walpole, Mass.) totaled 18 points and six rebounds, to lead the Holy Cross men's basketball team to a 63-53 victory over Bucknell at Sojka Pavilion. The Crusaders improve to 14-10 overall and 5-6 in the Patriot League with the victory, while the Bison fall to 10-15 on the season and 5-6 in the conference.
The game was close early on, and the Bison held a 12-11 lead after nine minutes of play. Holy Cross scored the next five points to go in front, and would increse its lead to six points (27-21) with two minutes left before the break. Bucknell then closed out the half with a 5-0 run, leaving the Crusaders with a one-point lead (27-26) heading into the locker room.
There were five lead changes and two ties in the first 11 minutes of the second half, and the score was tied at 42-42 with nine minutes left to play. Bucknell would eventually take a 46-45 lead with 5:35 remaining, before senior guard Kyle Cruze (Knoxville, Tenn.) hit a three-point field goal to put Holy Cross in front. After the Bison tied the score at 48-48 on a pair of free throws, junior forward Alex Vander Baan (Uxbridge, Mass.) hit a jumper to put the Crusaders in the lead for good. A three-pointer by junior forward Colin Cunningham (Memphis, Tenn.) with 2:15 left extended the Holy Cross lead to five points, and the Crusaders held Bucknell scoreless for the final 1:58 to pull away for the victory.
Holy Cross made 27 of 33 free throw attempts on the night (81.8 percent), and held a 28-21 advantage on the boards. Cruze finished the game with 16 points and six rebounds, while Vander Baan added 14 points and five boards. Bucknell was led by Justin Castleberry with 13 points.
Holy Cross returns to action on Wednesday, February 20, when it travels to Navy for a 7:00 p.m.
