Crusaders Use Dominating Defense To Top Colgate 68-44

WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior forward Colin Cunningham (Memphis, Tenn.) recorded 13 points, five steals and three assists to lead the Holy Cross men's basketball team to a 68-44 victory over Colgate at the Hart Center. Freshman guard R.J. Evans (Salem, Conn.) added 12 points and four steals for the Crusaders in the win. Holy Cross improves to 10-11 overall and 5-1 in the Patriot League, while the Raiders fall to 6-13 on the season and 2-4 in the conference.
The Crusaders started the game off hot, jumping out to a quick 15-3 lead after the first eight minutes of play. Colgate responded with a 7-2 spurt, and would eventually cut the Holy Cross lead down to four points (22-18) with two minutes left in the half. The Crusaders eventually took a 26-20 advantage into the locker room.
Holy Cross was up by just four points (28-24) with 18 minutes remaining in the second half, when it went on a 15-2 run to put the game away. The Crusaders began that spurt by hitting five straight shots from the field, including a pair of three-point field goals from sophomore guard Andrew Beinert (Floral Park, N.Y.). The Holy Cross lead would grow to as many as 27 points late in the game, before the Crusaders finally posted a 24-point victory.
Holy Cross held Colgate to just 44 points on 34.3 percent shooting from the field, while posting a 30-18 rebounding advantage. The Crusaders also recorded a season-high 14 steals, while forcing 17 total turnovers.
The Raiders were led by Yaw Gyawu with 15 points.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Jan. 31, when they travel to Lehigh for a 1:00 p.m. game.
