Jan. 26, 2007
WORCESTER, Mass. -- Senior guard Torey Thomas (White Plains, N.Y.) totaled 18 points, eight assists, seven steals and six rebounds, to lead the Holy Cross men's basketball team to a 64-53 victory over Lehigh at the Hart Center. Thomas scored the 1,000th point of his collegiate career with a layup at the 11:51-mark of the first half, to become the 43rd 1,000-point scorer in school history. The Crusaders improve to 16-6 overall and 7-0 in the Patriot League with the victory, while the Mountain Hawks fall to 9-14 overall and 4-3 in the conference.
Lehigh held a 10-9 lead after 12 minutes of play, before Holy Cross went on a 14-3 run over the next two and a half minutes to go up by 10 points (23-13). The Crusaders would eventually lead by as many as 13 points late in the half (32-19 with 2:55 remaining), but the Mountain Hawks closed out the half with a 7-0 run to trail by just six points (32-26) at the break.
The score stayed close early on in the second half, before Holy Cross used a 7-0 run to build its lead back up to 11 points, 46-35 at the 12-minute mark. But Lehigh refused to go away, and trimmed the margin down to three points (54-51) with four minutes remaining. Junior center Tim Clifford (Walpole, Mass.) hit on jumper on the Crusaders next possession to push the lead back to five points, and Holy Cross held the Mountain Hawks without a field goal the rest of the way to clinch the victory. The Crusaders would make all four of their free throws in the final minute of play, to eventually win by 11.
Clifford finished the night with 12 points and nine rebounds, while senior guard Keith Simmons (Kingston, N.Y.) added 16 points and six rebounds. Lehigh was led by Jose Olivero with 18 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Holy Cross returns to action on Wednesday, January 31, when it plays host to American at 7:00 p.m.
