WEST POINT, N.Y. - Freshman guard R.J. Evans (Salem, Conn.) had 17 points, five rebounds and three steals, to lead the Holy Cross men's basketball team to a 47-36 victory over Army at Christl Arena. Sophomore guard Andrew Beinert (Floral Park, N.Y.) added 14 points, while hitting five of seven shots from the field and four of five attempts from three-point range. The Crusaders improve to 7-10 overall and 2-0 in the Patriot League, while the Black Knights fall to 4-12 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Army opened the game with a 7-2 run, and would expand its lead to seven points (13-6) with 9:27 remaining in the first half. Holy Cross then responded with a 10-2 spurt of its own, to take a 16-15 lead with three minutes left before the break. The Crusaders eventually took a 21-19 advantage into the locker room.
The score remained close early in the second half, and Holy Cross was up 28-27 with 13:54 left in regulation. Beinert then hit three-point shots on three straight possessions, igniting a 19-3 run which put the Crusaders up 47-30 with 3:48 remaining. At one point during that spurt, Holy Cross held Army scoreless for a span of 8:45. The Black Knights closed the game with a 6-0 run, as the Crusaders won by 11 points.
Holy Cross turned in one of its top defensive performances of the season, holding Army to just 36 points on 30.0 percent shooting from the floor, while forcing 17 turnovers.
Junior forward Adam May (Mentor, Ohio) finished with eight points, seven rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots for the Crusaders. The Black Knights were led by Cleveland Richard with eight points, three rebounds and three assists.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Jan. 17, when they travel to Bucknell for a 12:00 p.m. game which will be shown live on ESPNU.
