Men’s Basketball Falls To Lafayette In Patriot League Quarterfinals
EASTON, Pa. – Junior forward Dave Dudzinski (Elburn, Ill.) posted game-highs of 22 points and eight rebounds, but the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by Lafayette 77-54 at the Allan P. Kirby Sports Center in the quarterfinals of the Patriot League Tournament. Dudzinski connected on nine of 16 field goal attempts and four of six free throws on the night. The Leopards improve to 18-14 on the season, and advance to play Lehigh in the conference semifinals on Saturday, March 9. The Crusaders conclude the year at 12-18 overall.
Lafayette hit 51.9 percent of its field goal attempts in the game (28 of 54), including 53.8 percent shooting from three-point range (14 of 26). Holy Cross was able to connect on only 34.6 percent of its shots from the floor (18 of 52), and was outrebounded 33-31.
The game was close early on, and the Crusaders held a 15-12 lead after the first five minutes of play. The Leopards then went on a 16-0 run over the next four minutes to claim a 28-15 lead. Lafayette would stay ahead by at least 10 points for the remainder of the half, and took a 45-31 advantage into the locker room.
The Leopards were still up by 14 (50-36) with 17:57 remaining the second half, before using a 16-2 spurt to put the game away. Lafayette would lead by at least 20 points for the rest of the game, eventually posting a 23-point victory.
Senior guard Dee Goens (Alpharetta, Ga.) finished the night with nine points and three rebounds, while senior guard Jordan Stevens (Gansevoort, N.Y.) added nine points and two assists. The Leopards were led by Seth Hinrichs (20 points, four assists, three rebounds) and Tony Johnson (19 points, seven rebounds, five assists).
