HAMILTON, N.Y. – Junior forward Dave Dudzinski (Elburn, Ill.) totaled 15 points and eight rebounds, but the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by Colgate 63-45 at Cotterell Court. Dudzinski hit five of nine field goal attempts on the day, including all three of his shots from three-point range. The Crusaders fall to 10-12 overall and 2-5 in the Patriot League with the loss, while the Raiders improve to 9-14 on the season and 3-4 in the conference.
Holy Cross committed 15 turnovers in the game to just six for Colgate, while being outrebounded 33-30. The Crusaders also made only 37.8 percent of their field goal attempts (17 of 45), and attempted six free throws on the day (making four).
Both teams struggled to score early on, and the Raiders held a 10-5 lead with 12:47 remaining in the first half. Holy Cross then used an 11-2 run over the next four minutes to claim the lead, with Dudzinski hitting two three-pointers during that time. The Crusaders were still up by four (21-17) with 6:40 left before the break, when Colgate score the next eight points to pull back in front. The Raiders would eventually take a 28-26 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
Holy Cross played excellent defense to start the second half, holding Colgate to only two points over the first six minutes. But the Crusaders could manage only five points of their own during that time, and led just 31-30 with 14 minutes left to play. The Raiders then netted the next seven points to reclaim the lead for good. Colgate was later up by five points (46-41) with 6:35 remaining, before using 7-0 spurt to put the game away. The Raiders would go on to outscore the Crusaders 7-0 in the final two and a half minutes, to pull away for an 18-point victory.
Senior center Phil Beans (Toledo, Ohio) finished the game with 10 points and three rebounds for Holy Cross. Murphy Burnatowski led Colgate with 19 points and three rebounds.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Feb. 9, when they play host to Lehigh at 4:00 p.m.
