WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior guard Mike Cavataio (Forest Hills, N.Y.), a member of the Holy Cross men's basketball team, has been selected as the 2011-2012 recipient of the Richard J. Maloney Award. Since 1981, the Maloney Award is presented annually by the Holy Cross Varsity Club to the men's basketball player who best exemplifies Mr. Maloney's spirit and energy as a loyal contributor to the program.
After missing 13 games early in the 2011-2012 season due to injury, Cavataio came back to average 5.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per contest, while hitting 80.0 percent of his free throws (12 of 15). A year earlier in 2010-2011, he averaged 8.9 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists per contest and hit 41.6 percent (102 of 245) of his field goal attempts. During the 2009-2010 season, Cavataio averaged 11.3 points, 5.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists per contest, while shooting 47.1 percent (131 of 278) from the field and 82.1 percent (78 of 95) on the free throw line.
Cavataio sat out the 2008-2009 season after transferring to Holy Cross from St. John's, where he totaled 23 points and 20 rebounds during his only year with the Red Storm. During his career at Holy Cross, Cavataio totaled 693 points, 394 rebounds and 155 assists.
