Justin Burrell Named Patriot League Rookie Of The Year
WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross freshman guard Justin Burrell (Dumfries, Va.) has been named the 2011-2012 Patriot League Rookie of the Year in men's basketball, as voted by the conference's head coaches. Burrell was also selected to the Patriot League All-Rookie team, while senior guard Devin Brown (Baltimore, Md.) earned second team All-Patriot League honors for the second year in a row.
Burrell has averaged 7.4 points, 3.8 assists and 2.1 rebounds per game on the year for the Crusaders, while hitting 78.0 percent of his free throws (64 of 82). He finished the regular season ranked second in the league in assists, third in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.7-to-1), 11th in free throw percentage and 29th in scoring. Burrell has scored in double-figures 10 times on the year, in addition to leading the team in assists 19 times. He has also stepped up his play during Holy Cross' current six-game winning streak, averaging 11.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 2.2 assists during that time, while connecting on 50.0 percent of his three-point field goal attempts (nine of 18).
Brown has averaged a team-best 14.5 points per game this year, while hitting 36.6 percent (52 of 142) of his three-point attempts and 74.6 percent (94 of 126) of his free throws. He finished the regular season ranked seventh in the league in scoring, sixth in scoring, eighth in three-point field goals made, 12th in field goal percentage (.441), 13th in free throw percentage and 14th in three-point field goal percentage. Brown has led the team in scoring 16 times this year and scored in double-figures 20 times. Over the course of his Holy Cross career, Brown has now totaled 1,412 points, 248 rebounds and 147 assists, while hitting 37.5 percent (188 of 501) of his three-point field goal attempts and 79.5 percent (356 of 448) of his free throws.
Holy Cross (15-13 overall, 9-5 Patriot League) returns to action on Wednesday, February 29, when it plays host to Lafayette in a quarterfinal round game of the Patriot League Tournament. The contest between the Crusaders and the Leopards is scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
