WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior guard Devin Brown (Baltimore, Md.) totaled 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists, to lead the Holy Cross men's basketball team to a 59-52 victory over American at the Hart Center. Sophomore forward Dave Dudzinski (Elburn, Ill.) added 10 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots for the Crusaders. Holy Cross improves to 11-13 overall and 5-5 in the Patriot League with the win, while the Eagles fall to 16-9 on the season and 7-3 in the conference.
Holy Cross shot 43.2 percent from the field (22 of 51), while holding American to 32.2 percent shooting (19 of 59). The Crusaders also held a 43-32 advantage on the glass.
After Holy Cross scored the first four points of the game, the Eagles went on a 13-1 run over the next six minutes to pull ahead by eight points (13-5). The Crusaders used a 7-0 spurt to close the gap, and American would later lead 20-18 with 5:33 left before the break. Holy Cross then closed out the half with a 10-0 run, including five points from freshman guard Justin Burrell (Dumfries, Va.), to take a 28-20 lead into the locker room.
The Eagles chipped away at the lead early in the second half, trimming the margin to five points (34-29) with 14 minutes remaining. But the Crusaders responded with a 12-2 run over the next five minutes, to take their biggest lead of the game, 46-31 with nine minutes to go. Holy Cross was still up by 11 (53-42) at the 4:57-mark, when American used a 7-0 spurt to make the score 53-49 with 2:22 remaining. But the Crusaders did not allow the Eagles to score again until less than five seconds remained, and held on for the win despite hitting just six of 12 free throws in the last two minutes.
Burrell finished the game with eight points, three rebounds and three assists, while junior guard R.J. Evans added six points, eight rebounds and two assists. American was led by Charles Hinkle with 14 points on four of 18 shooting from the field.
The Crusaders will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 15, when they travel to Lafayette for a 7:00 p.m. game.
