WEST POINT, N.Y. – Junior guard R.J. Evans (Salem, Conn.) totaled 18 points, five assists and three rebounds, but the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by Army 74-68 at Christl Arena. The Black Knights were led by Ella Ellis with 26 points and five rebounds. Holy Cross falls to 8-12 overall and 2-4 in the Patriot League with the loss, while Army improves to 10-11 on the season and 3-3 in the conference.
The Black Knights shot 54.5 percent from the field on the night (24 of 44), while holding a 28-12advantage in free throw attempts. Holy Cross did force Army to commit 20 turnovers in the game, but also had 19 turnovers of its own.
Army started the game hot, jumping out to an early 12-2 lead after the first four minutes of play. The Black Knights were still up by nine (15-6) at the 13-minute mark, when the Crusaders went on a 12-0 run to claim their first lead of the night. Holy Cross eventually led by seven points (26-19), before Army came back to tie the score at 33-33 heading into the locker room.
The Black Knights were back in front 46-45 early in the second half, when the Crusaders used a 7-0 spurt to regain the lead. But Army came right back with a 14-0 run of its own, and led 60-52 with 7:27 left to play. Holy Cross was able to trim the margin down to two points (63-61) when senior guard Devin Brown (Baltimore, Md.) hit a three-point field goal with 5:16 remaining, before the Black Knights scored the next 10 points and went on to post a six-point victory.
Brown finished the game with 12 points and two steals, while sophomore forward Dave Dudzinski (Elburn, Ill.) added nine points and five rebounds. Jordan Springer posted 18 points and eight rebounds for Army.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Jan. 28, when they play host to Colgate at 5:00 p.m.
