Holy Cross Falls 79-75 In Overtime At Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior guard Devin Brown (Baltimore, Md.) totaled 27 points and three rebounds, but the Holy Cross men's basketball team was defeated by Lehigh 79-75 in overtime at Stabler Arena. Brown hit 10 of 15 attempts from the field and four of six shots from three-point range on the day. Holy Cross falls to 4-17 overall and 3-4 in the Patriot League with the loss, while the Mountain Hawks improve to 12-10 overall and 3-4 in the conference.

Lehigh made eight of its first 10 shots from the field, jumping out to a 16-8 lead just 3:31 into the game. Holy Cross responded with a 10-0 run over the next three and a half minutes of play to pull in front. After a three-pointer by C.J. McCollum gave the Mountain Hawks a 19-18 lead, the Crusaders held Lehigh scoreless for the next 9:16, using a 12-0 spurt to take a 30-19 advantage. Holy Cross eventually held a 34-25 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

Early in the second half, the Crusaders increased their lead to 12 points (46-34) with 14:37 left to play. The Mountain Hawks then began to chip away at the deficit, using an 11-5 run over the next four minutes to make it a six-point game. Holy Cross was still up by eight (56-48) with 7:33 to go, before an 8-1 Lehigh run made it a one-point game. The Crusaders held a slim lead until the 1:18-mark, when a pair of free throws by McCollum gave the Mountain Hawks a 66-65 advantage. A three-pointer by Brown put Holy Cross back up by two, before Lehigh's Jordan Hamilton made two foul shots to tie the score at 68-68 and force overtime.

In the overtime, the Mountain Hawks jumped out to a 75-68 advantage on a free throw by Mackey McKnight and three-pointers by McCollum and Michael Ojo. The Crusaders refused to die, eventually making it a two-point game (77-75) on a three-pointer by Brown with 48.3 seconds to go. But Hamilton then scored for Lehigh on an offensive rebound to make the score 79-75, and Holy Cross was not able to score again.

Junior guard Mike Cavataio (Forest Hills, N.Y.) finished the game with 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals for the Crusaders. The Mountain Hawks were led by McCollum with 29 points, 14 rebounds and six assists.

Lehigh outscored Holy Cross 21-14 on the foul line, while attempting 20 free throws in the second half and six more in overtime.

The Crusaders return to action next Saturday, Feb. 5, when they travel to Lafayette at 1:00 p.m.
