Holy Cross Pulls Away For 71-50 Victory At Navy
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Sophomore forward Eric Obeysekere (Orinda, Calif.) posted his first career double-double with a career-high 16 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots, to lead the Holy Cross men's basketball team to a 71-50 victory over Navy at Alumni Hall. Sophomore guard Jordan Stevens (Gansevoort, N.Y.) also had a big night for the Crusaders, tying his career high with 15 points while hitting all four of his three-point field goal attempts. Holy Cross improves to 4-14 overall and 3-1 in the Patriot League with the win, while the Midshipmen fall to 5-15 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
Holy Cross opened the night with a 10-0 run over the first 4:40, hitting five of its first eight field goal attempts. The Midshipmen trimmed the margin to six points (17-11) with nine minutes left in the first half, before junior guard Devin Brown (Baltimore, Md.) and senior guard Andrew Beinert (Floral Park, N.Y.) hit back-to-back three-pointers to make it a 12-point game (23-11). The Crusaders eventually led by 17 points late in the half, before taking a 33-19 advantage into the locker room.
With 14:32 remaining in the second half, Holy Cross had increased its lead to 15 points (44-29) after a three-pointer by Stevens and a layup by senior forward Josh Jones (Ocala, Fla.). Navy then went on an 11-0 run over the next three and a half minutes, to make the score 44-40 with 10:54 left on the clock. But Beinert and Brown would then hit back-to-back shots from the behind the arc once again, igniting a 10-0 run which built the Crusaders' lead back to 14 points (54-40). Holy Cross would lead by at least 10 points the rest of the way, eventually pulling away for a 21-point victory.
The Crusaders had one of their top defensive performances of the season, holding the Midshipmen to just 28.1 percent shooting from the field (18 of 64) and 4.0 percent shooting from three-point range (one of 25). Holy Cross also recorded a 45-38 advantage on the glass.
Beinert finished the night with 14 points, eight assists and six rebounds, while Brown added eight points and a career-high seven rebounds. Senior center Andrew Keister (Galloway, N.J.) also played well, totaling nine points and six rebounds.
Navy was led by Jordan Sugars with 16 points and eight rebounds.
The Crusaders return to action on Saturday, Jan. 22, when they play host to American at 2:00 p.m.
