WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior guard Devin Brown (Baltimore, Md.) scored 25 points while hitting seven of 15 three-point attempts, as the Holy Cross men's basketball team posted a 77-70 victory over Assumption in an exhibition game at the Hart Center. Junior guard R.J. Evans (Salem, Conn.) added 18 points on eight of 12 shooting from the field, in addition to pulling down five rebounds.
Holy Cross held a 5-2 advantage early in the game, before the Greyhounds scored seven straight points to take the lead. Assumption eventually increased its edge to six points (22-16) with eight minutes left in the first half. The Crusaders then scored nine straight points to pull back in front, with Brown hitting a pair of three-pointers during that spurt. Holy Cross eventually took a 32-31 lead into the locker room.
The score stayed close early in the second half, and the Crusaders were still up by one point (49-48) with 13:28 left to play. Holy Cross then used an 11-2 run to increase their lead to double figures, with another Brown three-pointer capping the spurt. The Crusaders would go up by 12 points (69-57) with just under five minutes remaining, before eventually claiming a seven-point victory.
Junior guard Mike Cavataio (Forest Hills, N.Y.) finished the night with 10 points and four rebounds, while sophomore guard Jordan Stevens (Gansevoort, N.Y.) added six points and team-high nine rebounds. Assumption was led by Tim Beinert with 15 points and six rebounds.
Holy Cross opens the regular season this Saturday, Nov. 13, when it plays host to the College of Charleston at 7:00 p.m.
